Conference

The Session I attended at the 2011 WV Technology Conference was entitled, "Smartboard Magic by Lori Whitt, Kanawha County Technology Facilitator. She gave us all kids of ideas on how to add pizazz to our smartboard lessons. The best part was that she passed out a CD and we added it into our my content section in smartboard. It was a great session one that you could actual take something away and have it with you so you can remember how to do it.

Final Reflection

I have added my blog of my 23 things to my technology resource website. I would like to have a few moments of time maybe during a snowday that I could get teachers in the lab and really go through my blog and show them what all they can do with blogs in their classroom

Summary: The preconference keynote was just fabulous. She talked about 10 items that make up THE SANDBOX MANIFESTO. Watching these children interact in the sandbox was the kind of collaboration, solving problems, innovation and creativity that we want to see in the classroom. Well worth watching. Acceptable Use Policies

AUP policy posted on Preston County Board of Education

AUP Policy for students and teachers
Technology Consent Form

Here is how we handle the web2.0 tools
"I will not participate in direct electronic communications such as, but not limited to, text messaging, message boards and web logs, chat rooms and instant messaging unless assigned for a specific educational purpose and under the direct supervision of the authorized PCS personnel responbile for assigning this activity. "

We might want to some of the wording it is outdated. The last date I can find that it was adopted was in 2007.

AUP records are kept in the permanent records at the school. Each year one teacher in our middle school that has all the students revisit the policy and have them sign off on it again.
Our school secretary is wonderful on WVEIS and has everything tagged in it and can print off class reports that list it studnets can be on internet, have picture take, video, etc.

When a student happens to not be able to do research for a project they are sent to the library for "book" to look at.

Share, Remix, and Reuse - Legally

I have several middle school students that like to add music to powerpoint presentations so I have decided to put on the site I am going to share with those teachers.

Skype

Skype project at Bruceton School. I will be using Skype to help a fifth grade teacher communicate with a classroom in California. We will be contacting them once a month. The classroom teacher already has the contact information. Things that will be discussed will be a book that we will be reading at the same time and discussing, what we are studying in school, what the weather is like, and what the house and communites are like that we both live in. As the year goes on I'm sure there will be other things that we come up with to do.

Twitter in the Classroom

http://twitter.com/#!/TigersClass

I found this twitter posting in the people results when I was searching ways to use twitter in the classroom and decided to take a look.

This teacher is having the students to write a little summary of the days activities in the classroom. I think the students would be fighting as to who gets to type the activity for the day and I would think that parents would love to get the tweets to see what is going on in their child's classroom. I would hope that parents could then ask the kids sometime in the evening when they get home more details about the day. This sure is a quick way for teachers to keep parents in the loop.

Be A Reader of Blogs

http://blog.cathyjonelson.com/

This blog is designed to offer helpful hints, tips, and tricks to teachers and library media specialists who are modeling the integration of technology in an authentic and ethical manner in the name of increasing student engagement. The content will be driven by questions she is asked or by her own current educational and technology interests. The site has won awards and looks very professional. The other thing I liked about this site is that she updates every Tuesday or more often if time permits. I feel I won't be some overloaded with new information this way.

Mid-Module Reflection

I am learning so many new things. I get frustrated knowing that the county didn't plan any staff development time for me to show off these new "techy" things. I am trying to figure out how I am going to do staff development. It is going to have to be after school and ask teachers to stay.

Something New 2.0

http://www.dipity.com/
I want to share this with the middle school social studies teachers in the county. I think this site would be more interesting. It has more action to it then putting a timeline in a powerpoint.

Dipity is a free digital timeline website. The mission is to organize the web's content by date and time. Users can create, share, embed and collaborate on interactive, visually engaging timelines that integrate video, audio, images, text, links, social media, location and timestamps

Learn From Video

Here is the link to the video that I watched on School Tube.

http://www.schooltube.com/video/9643b74f1ebb9ef8688c/Area-Perimeter-of-a-Rectangle

It goes with CSO M.O.6.4.2
Develop and test hypotheses to determine formulas for
*perimeter of polygons, including composite figures

I would hope by this time students know how to figure out the area of a perimeter, but I think this video would be a good one to show with a review lesson. Some students need to see it taught in different ways. School Tube and Teacher tube videos could be posted on teacher edline pages so that student/parents can review skills when they have homework to do or have been absent.

I did a search using #education
The topic that came up today was where you could ask President Obama questions today during his first tweets. Another was a discussion about why educators don't blog, and I noticed there was an ad posted at the top to the search at all times. Something I hadn't noticed before.
